Wrote another large work while in their service, Porábul meg-éledett Phoenix (1693). Receivel estate from Wesselényi in 1666, and from Mária Széchy, as reward for services. After death of Wesselényi made trip to Poland in 1667 to dispose of patron's Polish holdings. Entered service of Miklós Andrássy in Gömör in 1672. Married in 1674 to Judit Görgei, who died in 1691. Parliamentary delegate of Gömör County to session in Sopron in 1681. Delegate of Gömör County to Upper Hungary Meeting in 1683. Moved to Krasznahorkaváralja in 1685. Became first subprefect of Gömör County in 1686. Moved to Csetnek in 1697. Divided remaining years between county duties and writing. ¶ Most popular epic poet of older Hungarian literature. Exerted much influence on later writers. Often adapted works to meet changing political conditions: dedicated Kesergő Nympha (1683) to Palatine Pál Eszterházy; upheld cause of insurrectionists in Thököly Imre és Zrínyí Ilona házassága (1683), retracted his support in Rózsakoszorú. Near end of life he preferred to versify mythological themes: Csalárd Cupidó (1695), Chariclia (1700). ¶ Some of his poems have been translated into English and Russian.

Maintains that in 1949, when he returned to Hungary from Sub-Carpathia and felt an incomprehensibility and confinement in his poetry, he turned to prose. Surveys his novels; finds his short novels showing the writer of history and the original novelist working with new means; and states that he is both a realist and a romantic and that he has entered the history of the Hungarian historical novel. A review seeking to determine his importance and the value of his poetry in Hungarian literary history. States that he is the most important figure in Czechoslovakian-Hungarian lyric poetry between the two World Wars, that though he produces no new voice or forms, his poetry grows directly out of the life of the Hungarian community in Czechoslovakia, that his lifework reflects an age, that he views things as a European finding similarities in the condition and cares among peoples, and that he became a model of Slovakian-Hungarian lyric poetry and has something to express for all of Hungarian literature.

HELTAI GÁSPÁR

Born 1510? in Nagydisznód; died 1574 in Kolozsvár, Transylvania. Prose writer, preacher, printer. Descendant of a Saxon family in Transylvania. Did not begin study of Hungarian language until 1536 but became one of the most important writers of the period. Studied at Wittenberg in 1543 under Melanchthon. Returned to Transylvania in 1544 and became clergyman of Reformed, Evangelical, and Unitarian denominations successively. Became Unitarian about 1569 and in that year defended Unitarianism during a debate with representatives of the Reformed Church in Gyulafehérvár. Took on other responsibilities and produced literary works. In 1550 he became partner of György Hoffgreff in printing establishment in Kolozsvár. Two years later the press was functioning under Heltai's name, and after his death his widow continued its operation. From 1560 on owned paper mill. ¶ His press and his writings aimed at meeting standards of world literature. Most of his works were based on German and Latin originals but are more than pure translations. Among them are A részegségnek és tobzódásnak veszedelmes voltáról való dialogus (1552), an attack on drunkenness and luxurious living; Háló (1570), an attack on the Inquisition; and Chronica (1575), a translation of Bonfini's Latin work containing many of Heltai's interpolations. His most important work is Száz fabula (1566), a collection of Aesop's fables, whose episodes he converted into miniature short stories.
