Italian military architects

Lipótvár
In 16th-17th-century castle and fortress architecture the most skilful masters were Italian, later German and French military architects were famous, too. This can be explained by the fact that modern firearms - which forced fortress architecture to change radically - spread very fast in these regions at the end of the 15th century and then at the beginning of the next century. In Hungary the reconstruction and modernisation of fortresses and the design of huge, new fortresses (Érsekújvár, Károlyváros, Győr, Komárom, Szatmár, Eger, Várad) were performed by Italian military architects, who were employed by the Court Military Council. The most famous fortress-building masters of the 16th century were Petro Ferrabosco, Ottavio Baldigara, Francesco Benigno and Julio Turco.
