emblem

Emblem
The representation of an abstract meaning with an image, an accompanying motto, and an explanatory epigram. It was a particularly popular genre in Renaissance art. On monumental works of arts, such as frescos, the epigram is usually omitted. Collections of emblems were published in separate volumes. One such work is the Emblemata by János Zsámboky, in which all the three components of the emblems are present. In Hungary Kristóf Lackner, the humanist mayor of Sopron, also created emblems.
