the Thurzó tombstone in Lőcse (Levoča, Slovakia)

Funerary monument of Elek Thurzó
Funerary monument of Szaniszló Thurzó
The tombstone of Kristóf Thurzó (1614) in the St. James church of Lőcse is an almost exact copy of the tombstone of István Szapolyai (1499) in Szepeshely (Spisšká Kapitula, Slovakia). Thurzó's tombstone copies the completely old-fashioned armour, the pose of the figure, the lion by his feet, the cloth of honour held by angels, and the banner from Szapolyi's tombstone, in a similar arrangement. The tombstone of Szaniszló Thurzó (1625) in Lőcse follows the late medieval model less closely. The master of the latter tombstone (and perhaps also of the former) was the same Johann Weinhardt who made the entrance door of the Ebner house in Besztercebánya (Banská Bystrica, Slovakia) in Mannerist style (1636).
