Mihály Sztárai (†1575)

Mihály Sztárai: Az igaz papságnak tüköre
One of the most successful reformers of the era: he set up almost one hundred churches on the former properties of Péter Perényi in the Turkish occupied territories. He was one of the originators of Protestant singing poetry: his congregational songs and psalm paraphrases remain popular even today. His verse-chronicles pointed out examples of behaviour patterns for the Hungarian Protestants for centuries to come: these were example of martyrdom and heroic behaviour. His dramas of religious dispute (i.e. The mirror of true priesthood, 1559) followed the traditions of the Italian and Hungarian folk theatre, the antique values (Plautus) and the method of argumentation of the dispute-literature of the era prior to the reformation.
