Hoffgreff, Georg (Kolozsvár, 1520/1525 - Kolozsvár, 1558/1559)

Sebestyén Tinódi Lantos
In 1544 he was educated in Johannes Honterus's school in Brasso, later he studied printing in Nurnberg. When he returned home he founded a printing house in 1550 together with Gáspár Heltai. One of his best-known works was Sebestyén Tinódi's Cronica of 1554. He published the first collection of Protestant preaching songs and Biblical stories, it was called the Hoffgreff song book. Like the majority of Germans living in Hungary he was a follower of Lutheran Reformation, so might not have liked the radical Protestantism of Kolozsvár. This might be the reason he left the Heltai printing house, which followed the religious development of the town.
