He was born as Charles I and Elisabeth Piast's third son on 5 March 1326. Because of his elder brothers' death he soon became the heir to the throne in 1329. Before 1388 he was Prince of Transylvania. On 21 July 1348 he was crowned Hungarian king, on 17 November 1370 he was crowned Polish king. In 1348 he took up the title 'King of Sicily and Jerusalem'. His first wife, Margaret, daughter of Charles IV, German-Roman emperor, died as a child in 1349. From his second marriage (1353) to Elisabeth, Bosnian princess, he had three daughters: Catherine (1370), Maria (1371) and Hedvig (1373). He died on 10 September 1382 at Nagyszombat. He was buried in Székesfehérvár. He received the adjective "Great" from the historiographers of the second half of the 19th century.
