Craftsmen's and tradesmen's (who lived in the same town) association for the protection of their common interests, which functioned according to fixed rules. Their association regulated their production, and the participants were also joined by common religious activities. Their first goal was to exclude the rivals and repress the activities of foreign and outsider craftsmen. These latter ones were called bunglers. The first guilds appeared in Hungary in the 14th century among the Transylvanian Saxons. The religious associations of the town were also called guilds, which were connected to a definite altar of a definite church.
