KISFALUDY KÁROLY

Born February 5, 1788 in Tét; died November 21, 1830 in Pest. Dramatist, poet. Descendant of landed gentry. Brother of Sándor Kisfaludy (q.v.). Attended Benedictine gymnasium in Győr in 1798. Poor student, dismissed in 1804. Immediately entered newly established officer training institute in Győr and became member of infantry regiment as cadet, paying own expenses. Fought against French at Caldiero in 1805. Served as border guard in Slavonia 1806-1809. Second lieutenant in 1809. Again fought against French around Munich; was captured and escaped. Returned with regiment to Pest in 1809. Resigned from army in 1811 and returned to Tét in August. Rejected by father; found refuge in sister's home in Vönöck. Went to Vienna in February 1812 to study at Academy of Fine Arts but wasted money, attended theater. Saw his limitations in painting. Learned engraving in 1813. Visited Italy in 1815. Back in Vienna in 1816, but went to friend's home in Pozsony; returned to Pest in spring 1817. Father continued to refuse support. Unable to obtain employment. Turned increasingly to writing. Presentation of Tatárok on April 18, 1819, in Székesfehérvár and on May 3 in Pest brought him immediate fame, and he began ten years of highly productive creativity. Began to edit Aurora in 1820 but unable to finance its publication until 1821. Became center of younger writers of Pest, among them József Bajza (q.v.), Ferenc Toldy, and Mihály Vörösmarty (q.v.). Received Marczibányi Prize in 1826. Health steadily declined at end of 1829; died of pneumonia. ¶ Leader of first generation of romantic writers in Hungary. Poems show influence of German traditions and effect of instructions of Kölcsey and Kazinczy (qq.v.), and deal with love and patriotism. Stories, mainly between 1822-1825, are both tragic and comic, the former dealing with Middle Ages, the latter with contemporary situations. Most important as a dramatist. Wrote mainly comedies dealing with contemporary characters and situations. The comedies introduced characters from patriarchal life, used original humor and novel situations, created natural dialogue in Hungarian drama, and showed the influence of Kotzebue in structure and techniques. ¶ Some of his poems and plays are available in anthologies in Bulgarian, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, and Russian.

KISFALUDY SÁNDOR

Born September 27, 1772 in Sümeg; died October 28, 1844 in Sümeg. Poet, dramatist, writer of tales. Descendant of landed gentry. Brother of Károly Kisfaludy (q.v.). Studied in Győr 1783-1788, then read philosophy and law at Királyi Katolikus Akadémia in Pozsony 1788-1791. Studied law at home 1791-1792. Knew German. Joined army in 1792. Lived in Vienna 1793-1796. Sought to marry Róza Szegedy in 1796; she refused because of his relations with Mária Medina, then consented in 1800. Fought against French in Milan and captured in 1796. Imprisoned in Draguignan but released after two months through intercession of Karolina d'Esclapon, who had met him during her visit with relatives in Hungary. Went to Klagenfurt and then to Württemberg, where he fought against French for about two years. Lived on wife's estate in Kám 1800-1805. Increased writing activity. Involved in political matters after 1808. Among the defenders of Hungary against Napoleon's invasion in 1809 and wrote Hazafiúi szózat to rouse his countrymen to action. Opposed ideas of Ferenc Kazinczy (q.v.) with respect to language reform. Received Marczibányi Prize in 1820. Wife died in 1820; two years later married 20-year-old Amália Vajda, who died shortly after. Became member of Academy in 1830. Shared 1834 Academy Prize with Mihály Vörösmarty (q.v.). Became member of Kisfaludy-Társaság in 1835. Resigned from Academy in 1835. Withdrew increasingly from public activity. ¶ Poet of Hungarian aristocracy. Like Dugonics and Gvadányi (qq.v.), he was closely connected with European pre-romanticism: creation of his poetry a product of genius rather than learning. His lyric poetry was influenced by French pre-romanticism, in addition to Petrarch, and his narrative poems by German pre-romanticism. His stories taking place in castles introduced the shorter narrative poem to Hungarian literature and dealt romantically with Hungarian past. His dramas were unsuccessful but informative about views and attitudes of aristocratic class. Fame rests on the immensely popular epic-lyric cycle, Himfy, which tells of Himfy's unrequited love, the narrative interspersed with songs describing nature, praising beauty of women, and complaining of hopeless love; used new stanza form. ¶ Some of his poems have been translated into English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Swedish.

Pursued Judaic studies at Miskolc, Csorna, and Jánosháza, but did not want to become rabbi. Left home for Vienna when 13. Entered Protestant gymnasium in Rimaszombat in 1858 and continued studies at Református Kollégium in Debrecen in 1861. On death of father in 1862 he left school to earn living as itinerant teacher for five years. Moved to Pest in 1867 in hope of publishing poems. Became proofreader with Deutsch Publishing House. Published Zsidó dalok in 1868 at own expense. Undertook editorship of Képes Világ in 1873, which failed. Married daughter of poor relative in 1873. Position as reporter for Nemzeti Hírlap improved circumstances. Lived in Temesvár 1876-1882 as secretary of Jewish religious community. Became member of Petőfi-Társaság in 1877, honorary member in 1897. Returned to Budapest in 1882 and served as official of Hungarian-French Insurance Society 1882-1889. Founded A Hét in 1890, which became influential voice of new literature in Hungary. Member of Kisfaludy-Társaság in 1914. Forced by financial problems to surrender A Hét to another editor and publisher in 1919. ¶ One of the most distinguished representatives of Hungarian lyric poetry at end of 19th century. Especially noted for ballads. Subjects came from emotional life of Jews and Hungarians, and language was extension of tradition of János Arany (q.v.). Experimentations showed strong Art Nouveau tendencies. Virtuosity in rhyme patterns and creation of distinctive quantitative meters make him precursor of versification of 20th-century Nyugat School. ¶ Editions of his poems and Mese a varrógépről are available in German, and some of his poems have been translated into Bulgarian, English, French, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Rumanian, Russian, Slovakian, and Swedish.

Attended Csokonai's funeral, in 1805. Supported Kazinczy's cultural, language, and literary reforms from first letter to him on May 19, 1808, to 1817, the period of their correspondence. Completed law studies at Debrecen in 1809. Went to Pest in 1810 to continue study of law, but interest in literature increased. Returned to Debrecen in 1810. Spent most of 1811 in Sződemeter beginning life of author. Settled on family estate in Átmosd in 1812 to practice farming. Depressed by such activity and isolation. Wanted to move to Pest, but lack of money limited him to visits (1813, 1817, 1826, 1832, 1835). For number of years beginning in 1826 he edited Élet és Literatúra with Pál Szemere, with whom he wrote Felelet, a reply to Mondolat, in the controversy over the reform of the Hungarian language. Became member of circle around Károly Kisfaludy (q.v.). Participated in first session of Academy. Need to take care of brother's widow and children ended possibility of his moving to Pest. Achieved reputation as orator in meetings of Parliament 1833-1836, in which he participated until first part of 1835, when he was barred from delegation, to the regret of Lajos Kossuth and youth of the day. In last years he read literature dealing with political science and law and writings of Byron, Scott, Bulwer, and Hugo. Died after week's illhess stemming from severe cold. ¶ Poetry expresses despondency and longing to escape self and immediate reality, the romantic sich fliehn. Poems deal with love, patriotism, and philosophical thoughts. His ballads broke new ground in Hungarian poetry. Prose writings and parliamentary speeches express his ethical concept of love of country: he who actively loves his country fulfills human obligation on earth. Form and substance of prose infiuenced by Latin writers, especially Cicero and Plutarch. Opened new period in Hungarian literary criticism when he sought to separate responsibly the good from the bad literature being written in the period. Equipped well for task by natural taste and by knowledge of aesthetics derived from comprehensive study of theory and practice. ¶ Some of his poems have been translated into Bulgarian, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Swedish.
