Preface

Following the issues a and b of the first volume of Onomastica Uralica, our aim with the present publication was to gather certain papers written by Hungarian researchers on Hungarian onomastics as well as all the selected bibliographies of Hungarian onomastics published in the volumes of the international onomastical bulletin Onoma into a single volume and, doing so, making the situation of researchers interested in Hungarian onomastics much more easier. This volume is useful not only for foreign onomasticians but for Hungarian researchers, too, since the full series of Onoma is hardly available in Hungary.

Since more than half a century Onoma has been one of the most important medium of international onomastic researches. Initiated by A. Dauzat, the first international congress on onomastics was held in Paris in 1938. Later ICOS (International Committee of Onomastic Sciences) was founded for the organization of the congresses. With the 1949 foundation of Onoma, the 3rd Congress, organized by ICOS, made a decision of science-historical importance. Onoma published selected bibliographical information by countries and/or languages, including recently published monographies and longer papers and providing an overview of the contents of onomastic periodicals. Besides, it also published papers concerning primarily the area of the Indo-European languages. The journal became a yearbook in 1993 and since then it has dedicated each volume to a certain topic in onomastics. We have to mention that Hungarian researchers also participated in ICOS, like László Gáldi, László Hadrovics, Béla Kálmán as well as Loránd Benkő and Ferenc Ördög.

This time Onoma's publications with Hungarian (and also Finno-Ugric) relevance are published here. Doing so we wish to make it possible for the researchers of European and non-European nations to attend the important onomastic researches on varied fields of the Hungarian onomasticians. We hope that this initiative would contribute to the maintenance of further interests towards onomastic researches as well as to the spreading and utilization of the results of Hungarian onomastics both in the field of Uralian (Finno-Ugric) onomastics and wider onomastics. The publication enables the researchers to make comparative analyses, too, when taking into account those specific features of Hungarian language and Hungarian proper names which differ from those of other languages.

Publications with Hungarian relevance published in Onoma are published in a chronological order in thematic groups. The largest chapter (Bibliographies) includes the annual bibliographies of Hungarian onomastic research which were published in the bulletin from 1953 to 1993. A separate chapter contains papers concerning the history of Hungarian onomastics (History of Hungarian Onomastics) and an other contains articles of Hungarian authors each concerning a special onomastic problem (Articles). Into the chapter under the title Hungarian Onomasticians, we included birthday congratulations and necrologies. For better orientation, we also publish the index of abbreviations used in Onoma.

The volume was prepared by scanning so the publications are in fact photocopies. According to this, we also indicate the original page numbers. As to the original sources, these are included in the table of contents. We owe special thanks to the former editors of Onoma and to its present editor-in-chief, Mr Willy van Langendonck, for the earlier publication of Hungarian onomastic papers and also to Ms Valéria Tóth, the technical editor of this volume, who contributed a lot with her strenuous, especially valuable and precious work to the public ation of the volume.
