Saint League

Memorial medal of Innocent XI
This was an anti-Turkish alliance between the emperor Leopold I., John Sobieski the Polish king and the Venetian Republic which was formed in the spring of 1684 with the backing of pope Innocent XI. The forming of this alliance was the first common collaboration between Central and Eastern Europe against the Turks, as in 1686 Russia also joined the league. Its main objective was to drive the Turks out of Hungary and the Pelopponesian peninsula, and this objective was more or less achieved by 1699.
