the occupied region

Route of the Turks
This expression referred to the territories which were actually occupied by the Turks, but it also meant the regions beyond the border fortresses where people paid tax to the Turks. In the Transylvanian sense of the word, it mean the latter one, that is the region where people had to pay tax to the Turks, while they called the actually occupied territories 'the land of the Turks'. In today's historiography the occupied regions refer to areas surrounded by the Turks and controlled by Turkish authorities. The regions where tax was paid to them is called 'occupied borderland'.
