foundry

Foundry
A factory where metallurgical or primitive iron processing works went on. In Hungary foundries using water power were already known in the 14th century. Foundries were wooden buildings to which a wooden barrage and a coal chamber were attached. The dammed brook water was directed to the bladed-wheels, this operates the swinging hammer, which hit the iron object. Iron poles and wires needed for production were heated in the furnaces in the foundry. In old foundries iron poles, wires and tools were made for peasants. There were significant foundries in counties Borsod, Gömör and Szepes, in Transylvania, Saxonia and in county Hunyad.
