Court culture

Knight and his lady
Initiation into feudal tenure
The lay culture of knights originated from France and it was wide-spread throughout Europe in the age of the crusades. On the base of Christian virtues they developed a specific ethic system and the idea of the "Christian knight". The main characteristic features of knights were willingness to serve, loyalty and obedience to his feudal tenant, Christian way of life, helping widows, orphans and the miserables, knightly fighting spirit, the admiration of women, cultivating court poetry. The common traditions and ideas developed a specific self-consciousness in certain layers of European nobility, which manifested itself in common ideas, clothing, and everyday traditions (such as the culture of eating). Court culture was booming around the courts of rulers, of course.
