SYNOPSIS

George Spiro's new play Dobardan powerfully addresses both the war in the former Yugoslavia and changes in Spiro's native Hungary after the fall of Communism. The two main characters, an unnamed couple "Engineer" and "Wife," struggle with the former's increasing obsession to adopt an orphan from Bosnia. Catalyzed by a phone call from a friend in Sarajevo, the Engineer comes to understand the former Yugoslavia's -- and Hungary's -- present, perilous situation with increasing angst. Supporting characters provide controversial explanations for the war which are both novel and shocking to the western reader. Finally, Engineer is drawn to a refuge camp in Hungary where the war's losers provide first-hand accounts of life before and during wartime in Yugoslavia, sounded in heart-rending voices. Engineer returns home to find that life will never be the same.
