Abstract

It was explained already by Prof. Gyula László, that the decoration of the 19th cup of Nagyszentmiklós is related to the twiggy embroidery on lowest stripe (showing the martyrs) of Hungarian coronation mantle dated 1031. The connection between these two decorations is confirmed, if we compare their entire decoration systems.

The crosses with the nails in their corners decorating the 3rd and 4th vases of Nagyszentmiklós appeared first around 790AD on the Carolingian denars, just at the time, when Charlemagne winded up the Avar state. Therefore these type of crosses could not get into the decorations made by the Avar courts. In addition this type of crosses + differ fundamentally from the avar X decorations drawn always into a square. As a consequence the 3rd and 4th vases could have been made only after the times of the Avars.

The hedge bedstraw (Galium mollugo), decoration on the Avar finds of Bácstopolya with its four thin spiky petals are strikingly different from the flowers of the spindle (Euonymus verrucosus) decorating the 1st, 5th and 6th vases of Nagyszentmiklós. Namely the flower of spindle has four rounded petals, which are missing on the hedge bedstraws. The motives of spindle flowers on the 1st, 5th and 6th vases of Nagyszentmiklós place them into the period of the Hungarian conquest as virtually identical spindle flowers appear on the finds of Szeged Bojárhalom (Móra Ferenc Múzeum 14/1890) and of Nagyteremia (MNM 76/1877.2).

The flower decoration on the neck of the 2nd vase of Nagyszentmiklós is distinguished by the four cavity on their petals from the Avar finds of Bácstopolya, while they are quite similar to the finds of Karos (HOM 94.38.l ) and Újfehértó-Miskepuszta (JAM V770) from the Hungarian Conquest period.

The time, when the neck of 7th vase of Nagyszentmiklós was decorated by daisies is given by the daisies on the discs from Buj (JAK arany 112) also made in the Hungarian conquest period.

The time of lily-type decorations on the 9th and 10th dishes of Nagyszentmiklós were made, is shown by the finds of Nagykörű from the Hungarian Conquest periode (MNM 106/1892. 38-41), as well as by the same type lilies on the column on the right of Saint Philip Apostle and on the column on the left of Saint Bartholomew Apostle on the Hungarian coronation mantle of 1031.

Summarising the investigation of the decorations of treasures of Nagyszentmiklós we have to say, that the goldsmiths of the Nagyszentmiklós treasures used such motives, as the Hungarian goldsmiths of conquest period; therefore they did not differ from them.
